The headlines here in London are that gas and electricity prices are rising by as much as 22% … I couldn’t believe it when I heard this. That’s a ridiculous price increase! And I know that  in countries such as Australian and America prices are also increasing. People have often talked about renewable energy before, about being able to power their own home … until today, I didn’t think it could be done cost-efficiently.

Then I stumbed across a website talking about how you could setup your own wind and solar power generation. Home electricity generation with true renewable energy – it seems like a really good way to save money and also save the planet!

Wind power was the bit that interested me most because where I am the wind is always blowing … the basics of how it works are :

• setup a small propellor
• as the propellor turns it generates electricity
• electricity is sent down to a battery storage system, excess electricity heats your hotwater and lights your house
• a special device converts the electricity so that you can use it to power your tv, stereo, everything!
• in some countries / states, you are able to send power back into the grid and get money for the electricity you generate

Wait?!?! What?!?! Yes, you read that right, you could reduce your electricity bills to zero, or even get paid to generate electricity for your neighbours!

If it sounds complicated its not, and actually there’s a really good website promoting a book that gives step by step instructions and says that you can build a working professional looking wind turbine for really cheap.
